A Brief History of the US Virgin Islands

While the US Virgin Islands were initially inhabited by Indians, by the 1800s, the islands were economically driven by the slave trade. Later, St. John and St. Croix maintained a plantation economy and St. Thomas developed into a trade center. After a rebellion on July 2, 1848, in St. Croix, slavery was abolished on July 3, 1848. The islands were under Danish control until 1917 when the US bought them for $25 million in gold, forming the US Virgin Islands.

Virgin Islands National Park

Located in St. John, two-thirds of the island is parkland. Visit Trunk Bay and its splendid forests or Francis Bay and the sea turtles. This park also houses the 18th century Annaberg Sugar Plantation. There is so much to do you can rest assured that you nor your family will ever be bored.

Annaberg Sugar Plantation

The Annaberg Plantation was a St. John’s plantation owned by Frederick Moth, the first Danish Governor of St.Croix, during the 1720s and 1730s. By the 19th century, Annaberg Plantation was one of the biggest sugar producers as well as a producer for molasses and rum for export. The ruins include a windmill tower, factory, slave quarters, and other structures associated with the plantation.
