A Brief History of Turks and Caicos
The history of the Turks and Caicos islands began with the Taino and Lucayan Indians, the original settlers. These settlers were known for seafaring, salt raking, and farming. For almost 700 years, these Indians were the sole residents of these islands. It was not until 1492 that the civilization disappeared. During the next 30 years, the salt-making industry was born, where Bermudians would come to rake the salt and then take it back to Bermuda. In 1874, the islands became the property of the British Crown Colony of Jamaica, until Jamaica won its independence from Britain in 1962, and Turk and Caicos remained a British Crown colony on its own. The islands became a tourism destination with the formation of Club Med Turkoise Resort in the 1980s and it has taken off since.
