A Brief History of Cozumel
It is believed that Cozumel was originally inhabited by the Mayans in the first part of the first millennium AD. In 1518, there was a population of around 10,000, until in 1520, smallpox struck. By 1570, 186 men and 172 women were left alive on the island. 1848 brought refugees and, in 1849, San Miguel de Cozumel was recognized as a town by the Mexican government.
Ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving, this 3.5-mile long reef includes a bronze figure of Christ some 55 feet underwater. Swimmers and divers can expect to find sea turtles, rays, barracudas, nurse sharks, and an array of colorful fish. Tours can be found at the marina in downtown Cozumel as well as Palancar Beach or your hotel’s pier.
Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park

Most of the buildings that can be seen are dated back to the Postclassic Era of 1200-1450 AD.
